Who we are

The Critical Education Collective is an interdisplinary hub of scholars, experts and practitioners delivering world class masters programmes in partnersip with leading universities.

We do not build generic postgraduate degrees. We build programmes around real professional communities.

Established in 2024 in response to a funding crisis impacting higher education in many parts of the world, it aims to harness digital technologies to make postgraduate education more flexible, accessible and sustainable. Our teaching staff and partner organisations are fully invested in our programmes, fairly rewarded and retain ownership of their labour.

As a direct consequence, our students learn from the best and benefit from a range of innovations both within and outside of the classroom.

    Our flagship MA Global Journalism and pathways are accredited by SOAS, University of London, which has a unique mission to challenge perspectives and empower students to question and find solutions to global challenges. Our students will benefit from the experience of studying at a world leading university, whether online or on its central London campus.

  • Institute for Journalism and Social Change

    As part of the MA Global Data Journalism, students learn from the professionals of the Institute for Journalism and Social Change (IJSC), a pioneering new international ‘learn-and-do’ initiative that is bringing together current and future journalists, researchers and activists to scale up impact, inclusion and innovations in service of social change.

  • Action on Armed Violence

    Our MA Investigative & Human Rights Journalism is delivered in partnership with Action on Armed Violence (AOAV), a London-based charity that records, investigates and disseminates evidence of armed violence against civilians worldwide, to ensure the respect and protection of their rights and to end armed violence against civilians in conflict.

  • Pathshala Institute

    Our MA Photojournalism and Global Justice pathway is delivered in partnership with the Pathshala Institute in Dhaka, and under the direction of world-renowned photojournalist and activist, Shahidul Alam.

  • Roast Beef Productions

    Our MA Documentary and Global Justice pathway is delivered in partnership with the multi-award winning Roast Beef Productions in London.

  • Prof Justin Schlosberg

    MA GLOBAL JOURNALISM

    Professor at the University of Westminster and SOAS whose research focuses on disinformation and political communication.

  • Shahidul Alam

    MA PHOTOJOURNALISM & GLOBAL JUSTICE

    Photojournalist, public speaker, storyteller, writer, blogger, curator, and educationist. Founder of the Drik Picture Library, the Pathshala South Asian Media Institute, and the Chobi Mela International Photography Festival.

  • Claire Provost

    MA GLOBAL DATA JOURNALISM

    Feminist investigative journalist and media innovator. Co-founder of the the Institute for Journalism and Social Change.

  • Dr Iain Overton

    MA INVESTIGATIVE & HUMAN RIGHTS JOURNALISM

    Award-winning investigative journalist, author and Executive Director of Action on Armed Violence. He has reported from around 80 countries and more than 25 conflict zones, covering armed conflict, organised crime and human rights abuses, and his journalism has won a Peabody Award, a BAFTA Scotland, two Amnesty Awards, a One World Media Award and other honours. He is an Associate Professor at SOAS University of London, where he teaches investigative, human rights and war reporting.

  • Dr Marcos Ortiz Finch

    MA GLOBAL JOURNALISM

    London-based academic, journalist, consultant, and media analyst. PhD in Media and Communications. He has over 20 years of experience as documentary film director, editor, script-writer and columnist for written, radio, television and digital media; as well as having worked as communications officer for presidential campaigns and political parties. He is also founder of Ojo del Medio, online platform that analyses Chilean media.
